Cooling fan?

Post by mjmnz » Mon Aug 26, 2019 6:18 am

I am setting up a RPi CNC using external stepper drivers (DQ542) on a large format CNC (1300 x 1000) after loosing two PCs running LinuxCNC in the last 12 months - psu's died - we live on the beach so salt laden air is an issue.

I now have a sealed PSU for the RPi but was wondering if other users have installed cooling fans for the RPi + hat? The stepper drivers are mounted remotely so no heat contribution from them.

Ideally I would like to put the RPi CNC in a sealed box but realise that may be asking for overheating problems.

I have already designed a case for the Pi/cnc hat with several versions to choose from, but I am working on one final version that will use a centrifugal blower fan that completely evacuates any hot stagnant air much more efficiently than a regular axial fan. The fan is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I will finish the final design in the next couple days.

Here is 1 of several versions that I designed. (this is the only one that I have printed so far.)
Limited to 3 images up to 500kb each, so I'll split the reply

Remaining 3 pictures.
BTW, I designed this to be printed without supports (other than those on the build plate only which are very small)

The latest and final design will have more room above the drivers and will get rid of the fan on the top and side and have more vent holes on the opposite end.

Very nice design...

What app did you use for the CAD work? I like the rounded supports..

I used Sketchup. The rounded standoffs allow you to print this with virtually no supports needed.

I will share this case on Thingiverse once I finalize everything. I will post a link here.
