Stepper motors not running.

Post by corwind » Tue Mar 05, 2019 2:47 pm

I have a raspberry pi 3+ running bCNC with a Protoneer cnc hat 2.60v and have tried to follow the instructions to setup these. When I run some g-code on the pi the RX light flashes on the Protoneer and the RX light blinks continually but the stepper motors do not run. Is there a way to check if I'm getting a signal to the external drivers and thru to the motors. Thanks

This sounds like you are having issues with enable pin. Could you measure the voltage at the enable pin and check if that is correct.

Some people skip the enable pin and keep the drivers enabled at all time. Especially if it's a heavy machine that should keep its position at all times.

I am having the same issue, new board works fine from Pololu drivers, does not run with external stepper drivers (yes -- the external driver boards are installed). The external stepper drivers work I was able to test them from an Arduino.

Problem is that these steppers are a bit to heavy current for the Pololu boards longer term. For testing, not a problem.

I also jumped the enable (wired EN+ to EN- with it grounded back to the CNC board) and that did not solve this.
Something else is awry with the external stepper cards/controls.
I have verified that the cards are installed correctly.

OK, cancel the red alert :)
I figured it out.
Was a combination of the graphics being poor on the web page and we also had the microsteps configured on the CNC board and on the external stepper driver (so 1/32 in both places).

Seems to be working correctly now.

Hey, I'm having the same issue, only... much worse...

Are the jumpers supposed to be installed if you're using external drivers? and can you post a picture of your Protoneer board and driver wiring?

No... the jumpers are disconnected from the external driver board.
