Let the smoke out :( What did I do wrong?

Post by CharlesVsWorld » Mon Jan 14, 2019 2:34 am

Hello Prontoneers,

I've been using the Arduino CNC hat for a while with great results and decided to upgrade to the Raspberry Pi version. I re-wired everything without the stepper drivers installed, checked that the Pi was working correctly then wired it into my home made plasma table.

I powered the Pi on via the external power supply, checked the wiring diagram on the board and turned on the ATX PC power supply that is connected to the board's power and saw a little whisp of the deadly grew smoke. Definitely fried the Pi and I have two questions:

* What was wrong with my wiring? I checked the diagram and had 12V going to the positive connection and all the grounds connected.
* Is it likely I've fried the Hat as well? What about the SD card?

GUTTED! But keen to get it resolved. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Could it be a power supply issue. How did you power the Pi? It still needs a 5V power supply of its own

HArd to say if the SD was damaged or not.(Will need to plug it into a computer or Pi to see if it works.)

The Pi has the official wall wart style micro USB power supply. The 12vdc for the hat is coming from a PC switch mode unit...

Still scratching my head about this one, here is the configuration I did to the hat - cloned the X axis and enabled 1/32 microstepping. Any bonehead moves here?

Dangit! The Pi was working fine before I activated the stepper motor driver supply. Is there a clear path for current to get from the Hat to the Pi? I know the Pi is dead, unsure if the Hat was affected.

I have put a meter across the supply, 12.3V, no more.

The board's mirco is connected to the Pi via Serial pins and powered by the 5V rail on the PI.

Only way is if the motor supply was shorted to the 5V supply.
