USB instead of Serial?

Post by rmasci » Sat Nov 03, 2018 3:33 pm

Really sorry if I asked this before but my application is for an XCarve. I can get the Easel driver to work on a RPi but the driver is looking for a USB not for Serial. I've tried to 'hack' it to get it to see the serial instead of the usb, and I am a I am a software developer but I just don't know Node JS and don't want to spend hours learning Node js just for this. Is it possible to get this board to talk to the Arduino using USB instead of Serial? Even if that requires soldering... I was thinking of using a serial to USB adapter but not sure what pins to cut and where to solder it up.

Thanks!

You could try this.
Paste the text below in to google images, it might give you some ideas.

Yeah after I wrote this I looked all that up. On my Serial to USB, I'd hook the green and white wire to the rx tx on pins to pins 8 and 10 on the Pi CNC Board, would I need to also connect the power / ground to it, or can I leave that off?

I would think you would need the gnd connection, not too sure about the power +v though.

The Hat runs on 5V , but the serial pins are running at 3.3V to be RPi compatible.

So you will need to hook up
3.3V
5V
RX
TX
GND

MAKE sure any logic pins your using connecting to your RPI are 3.3v, if it'snot 3.3v your likely to destroy your RPI or rpi clone... I have a tinker board by asus, and it has way more cpu power more memory and many other feaures the PI is lacking. But its also 3.3v only. I suggest looking at the (4 Chanels High Speed Bi-Directional 3.3V-5V Logic Level Converter for Arduino Raspberry Pi Electronic Development) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DC ... UTF8&psc=1 if you need to convert.

Agreed on the level shifter. We use the same setup converting the GRBL Serial lines.
