Power supply - RPi3/MegaPiHat/Ramps1.4

Post by timgow » Sun Nov 26, 2017 6:16 pm

Hi Bertus,
I have just produced smoke from my RPi3 and/or MegaPi Hat :(

I have a RPi3 with the Mega Pi Hat installed and on top of that a Ramps1.4 board. The RPi3 was powered via the microUSB using a 5V 2A supply.
I had installed the Arduino IDE and Pronterface, all looked ok. I checked the polarity of the Ramps1.4 main power supply 12V 10A. The moment that I switched on the 12V ramps supply was when the puff of smoke occurred.

Have I assumed correctly that the Mega Pi Hat is powered by the RPi3?
Is there an obvious flaw in my stack?

Regards, Tim

Can you tell what has actually smoked?

From what I can see there is no %V regulator on the Ramps board so the MEga supplies the 5V.

Did you have the stepper drivers installed?

Did you have anything else connected to the RAMPS? eg end stops? If you get them round the wrong way, you will connect 12V directly to an input port and blow the regulator.

Can you post a photo?
