Using Pololu sockets for external stepper drivers

Post by Jlel12 » Mon May 09, 2016 11:50 am

Is there any reason why the Pololu sockets couldn't be used to expose pins to drive external stepper drivers? Based on the pinout for the A4988 here (https://www.pololu.com/product/1182), it looks like I should be able to pull step, dir, enable, V+ and GND right off of the socket. Is this correct, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

You definitely can. I would just suggest that you keep the wires short to prevent noise entering your system.

I know massmind does just that with their thb6064ah drivers. They even have a cable pre made just for it. Here is a link for you.

( I have never used their cable, so have no first hand experience with it. just something I bookmarked a while back )

The Pololu socket adapter looks nice :)
I made a simulare thing of parts from an old floppy disk.

But now I have removed it and just fitted jumpers over the Pololu socket, to breakout the Motor connections for use with External drives.
I took the time this morning to make a drawing and a couple of pictures, hope it could help other "dummies" like me to a quick setup.

Haha.... That is an awesome little hack.

It might also apply to these drivers : viewtopic.php?f=10&t=135

Yes it will, and most of these external drives :)

Any experience with the DQ542MA Driver any one ?
I'm looking for a 1/128 - 1/256 drive in the 3-4 amp area for a very big Delta 3D printer....

I have made a quick PCB that will do the same as the jumper cables. Should have the samples in a week or two...

This would make it super easy for people to switch to external drivers... :D :D :D

JanBVik - I have been testing out the dq542ma drivers and will be using them on my current cnc I have designed and am mid way building. So far I am really liking them no complaints as of yet.

Bertus - Nice, I look forward to those pcb's. That would be a excellent solution.
